Secret Roman city

The Cologne tour tells you a story of old and modern history. The city of Cologne dates back to 38 BC when the Ubii made the first urban settlements on the river Rhine. In 50 AD the city became part of the Roman Empire under the name of Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium (Cologne) and from that moment on Cologne has served as the capital of many empires. While wandering through Cologne, you will notice pieces of Roman walls, gates, aqueducts, and towers. Some are exposed individually but many have been blended in with the modern cityscape. Visit the Romano-Germanic Museum, where you will find mosaics, jewelry and the biggest collection of locally manufactured glass from the Roman period in the world.

City of churches

With such an extensive history, the city is home to one of the most important churches of Western Europe, which you will all see during the Cologne tour. The foundations of the Great Saint Martin Church rest on a Roman chapel which was built on a little island in the river Rhine. The church used to be the most important landmarks of the city before the construction of the cities cathedral and is one of the twelve Romanesque churches in Cologne. Construction of the Grand Gothic Cathedral began early 13th century in order to house relics of the Three Kings. The cathedral was heavily bombarded during WII but resisted the bombs to preserve its importance as symbol of the city. Climbing this UNESCO World Heritage Site and ultimate masterpiece of gothic architecture will be rewarded with an incredible river view.
